2024 roundup: favorite products and tools

Hey everyone! Here is my 2024 roundup of my favorite products and tools for your hair! Most of these can be purchased either in my salon or on the salon’s website. The tools I will link for you!

First up are my top favorite brands of this year: Lakme, Aluram, Amika, and DesignMe.

Lakme and Aluram are clean conscious beauty brands which just always steals a piece of my heart and their products work amazingly and there is something for everyone from both of these brands. They also cover different price points depending on what your budget is! (There is always a monthly sale on the salon’s website FYI.)

Lakme’s launch of new and improved styling products was the best thing ever and I am OBSESSED. My favorite products from this line are the Pliable flexible hold hairspray, Top Ten styling balm, Body mist spray for volume of course, Rings for my curly hair gals, Blowout mist for a speedy and super conditioned blow dry and lastly Boost volumizing mousse. I could honestly make a separate post all about their shampoos and conditioners because, wow. I literally recommend all of them, just depending on what you are looking for or need for your hair!

My top products from Aluram are their Dry Texture Spray, and Leave In Conditioner. If you are a client of mine you have most likely purchased either one, if not both, of these products at least once! This brand is super clean and affordably priced which is a nice bonus to have the best of both worlds. Their shampoos and conditioners are also wonderful and something I always recommend. Aluram is a smaller brand which is nice because you aren’t overwhelmed by trying to select and try out different products, they’ve really nailed down a select dozen or so that work great. No need to over complicate things!

Amika is super popular to the consumer as you can find their products in Sephora and Ulta and this is a brand I have loved since I was in hair school. My tried and true products from them are their Perk Up Dry Shampoo and Un Done Dry Texture Spray. This brand has grown so much in recent years that I have not tried all of their products BUT I think they are just a killer brand overall. I’m also obsessed with their Top Gloss shine spray and I’ve heard wonderful things about their Soulfood nourishing mask.

DesignMe is also another popular consumer brand which consists of lots of great styling products and shampoos and conditioners that have been added on recently. I am currently loving their Hold.Me styling stick, which is great for those trendy slicked back styles. That styling stick really helps me slick back my crazy postpartum regrowth when I want to do a slicked back style. They are originally known for their line of volumizing products called Puff.Me which is for sure a must have if you are a fine haired girly like myself.

ONTO TOOLS!

I’m honestly a firm believer in simplicity. I know that the popular styling tools like the Dyson airwrap and similar tools are so widely known and raved about online, but I’m going to disappoint you and say that those are not my favorite. I also don’t think Dyson ever should have gotten into the hair industry to begin with, but I will digress. To each their own!

I personally feel like everyone should have at least three styling tools that are catered to their hair needs, not just what is trendy.

  1. We all need a classic blow dryer and for these I like either a Babyliss or Hot Tools. These are both my favorite styling tool brands as I use products from both behind the chair. Both Babyliss and Hot Tools are pretty affordable as well! They are reliable, last forever, and work super well.

Others you can find at Ulta or the drug store are fine, just be sure to replace them every few years as they aren’t built to last very long like the more professional brands.

  2. You need some sort of heat styling tool whether you like to curl/wave your hair or straighten it. I promise you it is OK to use heat on your hair. Just keep the temperature below 400 degrees and always make sure you are using products that have heat protection (all the Lakme styling products have built in heat protection) or a nice leave in conditioner to act as a heat protectant. A hot tools curling iron is always the way to go in my opinion. Their irons are classic, easy to use, affordable, and come in varying barrel sizes. They also make both Ceramic and Titanium options which I love. The barrel size will depend on two things- how long your hair is and what kind of curl you are looking to achieve. A smaller barrel like a one inch will give you tigher curls that last longer but for longer length hair it will be a pain to wrap around the iron. A larger barrel like a one and a quarter or one and a half inch will give you more of a looser waved curl and works well for longer length hair. Other good brands for a curling iron are the T3, Bio Ionic, Babyliss, Paul Mitchell styling wand, and the Beachwaver.

For a flat iron it’s a little bit easier to find a good one at a decent price, I just recommend a titanium plated one with a digital temperature reading as opposed to a dial. I really love the Paul Mitchell flat iron, it is pretty gentle on the hair and has a digital temperature guage which is very necessary. Way more damage can be done with a flat iron than a curling iron so keeping that temperature controlled is super important!

  3. Lastly, I love a smoothing brush or a thermal brush or having one of each in your cabinet. It’s important to note that this type of tool is NOT to replace a blow dryer or go from wet to dry hair. This is a tool to use when your hair is at least 80% dry or fully dry to smooth and style.

The Revlon blowout brush was a big tool on the market a few years ago and I love this tool. There are plenty of other brands as well with the same style and purpose just not with the Revlon label that are just as good so don’t feel bad if you use or purchase a ‘knock off’. This tool is great for those with a ton of hair and need a nice smoothing tool to help if the coordination of a blow dryer and round brush is too much. Simply dry your hair 80% or more and then do the rest of the work with this blowout brush and you will have that silky smooth look. You can give the ends a little bounce with this tool as well and Revlon has since made a root boost version that is the same style tool but just a smaller barrel. I love it all!

A tool I have been OBSESSED with lately, is the Amika Blowout Babe thermal brush. This is such a great tool to style your hair paired with velcro rollers to really get a bouncy, fresh blowout look. (Stay tuned in to my instagram for a tutorial reel very soon) I have been using this tool for a few months now when I want to wear my hair straight but still have some bounce and shape to it and I couldn’t love it more.

That is it my loves! Let me know if you liked this kind of blog post or what you want to see from me next on here!

Love you lots, thanks for being here,

XOXO

taking care of your hair in the summer

Taking care of your hair in the summer is so important! We are out in the sun, immersed in chlorine and salt water, and constantly throwing it up in a messy bun because we get so hot. By the end of the summer, our hair feels super dry and often needs a good haircut.

Here are a few tips to keep your colored hair safe this summer while enjoying all that summer has to offer!

  1. If you hair is colored, especially blondes, you should really avoid chlorine water all together. Put it up in a bun, don’t get it wet if you can help it. IF you decide to get your hair fully wet, don’t go in to the pool bone dry. Spritz your hair with a leave in conditioner spray or water or regular conditioner before going in. Your hair is like a sponge and can only absorb so much at a time. This will protect your hair from absorbing any chlorine chemicals that will turn it green and leave residue, or strip out any darker colors. Make sure to shampoo within a few hours of immersing in chlorine, don’t let your hair bake in the sun after.

  2. Salt water is okay, but be weary that there may be some mineral build up on the outer layer of the hair, so a clarifying treatment in salon might be something to take advantage of monthly if you’re a big ocean person.

  3. Your hair will be exposed to the most sunlight during the summer months. Be sure to nourish your ends with extra moisturizing products like leave in conditioners, oils and serums, and conditiong treatments or hair masks in salon or at home.

  4. If you are worried about your color fading while on vacation or a long weekend in a tropical area, when in doubt just throw a hat on and shield it completely from the sun. Make sure you are getting some shade periodically as well since a ton of hot sun exposure can stress the body!

Keep some of these in mind this summer! If there’s one thing I can warn you of more than the others, it’s the chlorine. It’s truly the worst for your hair so protect it at all costs!

Common myths about your hair

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

Do you ever hear weird sayings about hair and think they might be true? Today I’m using my expertise as a hair stylist to tell you about all those myths and wives tales and why they are all false!

  • Cutting your hair makes it grow faster
This saying is totally false for one reason- your hair grows from your scalp! Cutting your dead ends off allows your hair to grow in healthier and stay healthy instead of splitting, but will not actually speed up hair growth. (However, you should go no longer than three months without a haircut or your ends will split and continue to split.)

  • Pull out one grey hair, two more grow in its place.
This one, scientifically, makes no sense. Each individual hair strand grows out of one single hair follicle. Each hair follicle cannot produce more than one strand of hair so you can pull out your grey hairs in peace knowing you won’t be making yourself more grey. (Highly recommend NOT pulling any hair out of your head as you can actually damage the hair follicles and cause hair loss over time.)

  • Split ends can be repaired.
This one I’m super passionate about because there are way too many products on the market that claim ‘split end mender’ ‘split end repair’ etc. Once your hair is split, it will only split further up the hair shaft until you cut it off. The bonds in the hair cannot be repaired and fused back together like metal. You can use products to protect your split ends from splitting further, but that’s about it.
This is why frequent hair cuts are always recommended to keep the hair healthy!

Pro tip: If you can see through the last few inches of your hair, it’s time to let it go girl because there’s no coming back from that. There’s a significant difference between long healthy hair and long damaged hair.

  • Hair color is bad for pregnant women.
This one is definitely a touchy subject and varies depending on who you talk to. You can most definitely color your hair while you are pregnant, within reason. You can get highlights, and anything that is not permanent color. The only color that causes concern is the permanent color that lifts the pigment of the hair and replaces it, which contains ingredients like ammonia.
There are also tons of alternative permanent colors without any ammonia and are all organic that are totally safe as well! I’d definitely say to ask your doctor if you are concerned, but I guarantee you that your hair stylist has used color with plenty of pregnant clients and it is perfectly safe to do so. If color is not classified as permanent, there are no dangerous or harmful chemicals for your baby to absorb.

  • Shaving/waxing hair makes it grow in thicker.
This one is totally false, because of science again. You can’t change the texture of your hair and how it grows. If you have fine hair, you can’t change your body chemistry and make it grow in thicker. The reason this came about is because when you cut hair with a razor or wax it off, you are cutting the hair at such a harsh angle, that the hair that is left in the base of the follicle is now cut very blunt. When the blunt edge of that strand of hair grows in, it appears ‘thicker’ but that’s just because it’s such a sharp angle.

  • Conditioner makes your hair greasy.
This is such a silly statement and it drives me nuts! Conditioner is essential for everyone, male or female. Your hair needs the nourishment from the conditioner to look and feel healthy. There are lots of fine haired people that feel conditioner weighs their hair down, which is perfectly valid, but that just means you need a lightweight product specifically for fine hair. The main reason this myth came about, is because conditioner was marketed for years as a roots to ends product. In time, we realized that conditioner has way too many oils and should not be utilized at the root and only throughout the mid shaft and ends of the hair. Basically, if your hair is greasy after you condition, it was either placed on your scalp when it should not have been and/or you didn’t rinse the product well enough before you finished.

I’m sure there are many more myths and sayings we’ve heard over the years that are rumored to be true, but don’t believe them. Ask your hair stylist if you hear something weird that you think might be a myth! Trust the professionals my friends, not the internet.

XOXO

how does health and nutrition play into your hair, skin, and nails?

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

Okay friends, today I’m going to get a little technical and deep dive into something I feel I’m always having to explain and it’s just something that doesn’t really get talked about.

I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “you are what you eat” and while that phrase can be abrasive or offensive, it’s pretty accurate in the basic explanation of putting good into your body and getting/looking good on the outside of your body.

A lot of people don’t relate their hair, skin or nails as being a ‘part’ of their body since they aren’t major organs like your heart or liver. But whenever I get a client in my chair that asks why their hair is so unhealthy, the first thing I do is ask “what vitamins are you taking?” and they just look at me like, “huh?”

It’s SO IMPORTANT to keep your hair and skin and nails as healthy as possible. If you think about it, we as women are always trying new skincare products and wearing makeup, always coloring our hair, and always getting our nails done. That is all so normal and there is nothing wrong with that, HOWEVER, over time these things can take a toll just like anything else. Your nails will become weak from all the UV gel polish, your hair is going to be damaged from all the highlights, and your skin is going to be all mixed up from the sun exposure and continuation of different products.

What’s the way to fix that? Treat these parts of your body as you do the others. Take a hair, skin and nail vitamin every single day. You need biotin, zinc, collagen, vitamins D, C, and E to support healthy hair, skin and nails. Collagen helps with your skin’s elasticity and helps to give your hair more life. Biotin and vitamin E support healthy hair and nail growth, and vitamins D and C just strengthen everything in your body. You also shouldn’t be eating tons of sugar and making sure you get lots of nutrients from fruits and vegetables as these foods have tons of vitamins and minerals and micronutrients that our body needs as well to look and feel good.

It’s so very simple, but not enough people are doing this. Why is that? Well, we have social media telling us that our hair grows from the ends as opposed to our scalp so now we are making weird concoctions of egg whites and mayonnaise as a ‘hair mask’ and thinking those ingredients will grow our hair. The amount of young girls I get in my chair that come in and say. ‘oh I saw this hair hack on tik tok’ or ‘yeah I saw this mask recipe on pinterest’. NO. PLEASE NO.

Your hair grows from your SCALP which gets nourished by whatever you put into your body. It is not the other way around so get out of the kitchen and stop making weird combinations of foods that will do absolutely nothing for you besides waste your time. It is so frustrating to me as a professional hair stylist but it is also a great opportunity to talk about it on here.

Taking care of your body is more than just physical exercise and taking a multivitamin. Your hair, skin and nails are just as important and you need to stop neglecting them. Get off social media and ask your professional hair stylist for recommendations. It’s simple, and will save you so much time and aggravation.

These vitamins that I listed also help a multitude of other things inside your body and not just your hair, skin or nails. Nourish your body, and put good into it. Your hair and nails grow from inside of you, and your skin has so many layers that go beneath the surface. You cannot possibly nourish them from the outside because that’s not how the human body works!

Do you need to use good products and keep up with regular haircuts? Absolutely. Should you get facials and services to help nourish your skin? Totally. Should you go get your nails done and pedicures to clean and keep up your nails? Definitely. BUT to actually grow healthy, happy hair and nails, and to support healthy cell turnover in your skin, you NEED to put good things into your body.

It’s literally science my friends. Mayonnaise is not science, vitamins and your body chemistry are science.

collagen vs. biotin

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

BIOTIN

As a hair stylist, I’ve done a ton of recommending that my clients take biotin supplements to support hair health and growth. The important things to remember about your hair, skin and nails are that your hair grows from your scalp, your skin is an organ, and your nails grow from the nail matrix which is the inner most part of the nail leading in to the rest of the finger. See a pattern here? What you put INSIDE your body will result in a healthy OUTSIDE appearance. The saying “you are what you eat” is actually pretty accurate!

Biotin is a part of the B vitamins that you should be taking daily for health purposes. In a standard multivitamin you will see biotin listed along with all the others on the label. However, if your natural body chemistry is not enough and you feel your hair has no life to it and you feel it just doesn’t grow, supplement more biotin into your diet.

Biotin helps your body to use its enzymes and carry nutrients throughout your body. Biotin is good for the hair because it stimulates natural keratin production, and keratin is the main structural component of your hair, causing your hair to grow faster, look and feel healthier, and have more life to it. It’s super simple and doesn’t take any effort to add in another vitamin supplement to your daily life.

COLLAGEN

Collagen is actually a natural source of protein found in your body’s connective tissues along with other mammals like cows. Collagen has a ton of benefits for your health, but mainly it is one of the main building blocks of your bones, skin, hair, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

It’s what keeps your skin from sagging and your hair from losing its life and body. As you age, your body produces less and less of this protein just like it does with other vitamins and hormones. Collagen starts to slow production the earliest, so it’s good to get a jump on this supplement.

You can find collagen in all forms, and again, add it in to your daily life with no effort at all. Collagen helps your hair specifically because your hair does need the collagen protein in order to look and feel healthy.

To summarize, both supplements have great health benefits and I feel that both should be taken on a daily basis, especially in women. Biotin is more directly related to hair growth, but once I personally started adding in the collagen along with my biotin supplements, I felt like my hair and skin just skyrocketed and I am so happy with the results I’ve seen.

Grab some biotin and collagen and get going girl! Grow that hair and nourish that skin!

benefits of collagen peptides

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

For those of you who don’t know, collagen is actually the most abundant protein in your body- it’s actually a major component of your connective tissues like tendons, ligaments, muscles, and skin. So, why is it so important to supplement something that is already in your body?

It’s simple actually- every single day we get a tiny bit older than we were the day before. Just like our body is rich in tons of other nutrients and proteins, we still need to supplement them to solve some kind of issue we might be having or to help support overall health and wealth inside your body. Think of supplementing collagen as maintaining the proteins in your body chemistry.

An article from Healthline I came across states that there are actually SIX major health benefits from taking a collagen peptide supplement.

  • Improving skin health! Collagen will help to hydrate your skin, and reduce wrinkles and signs of aging. Taking a collagen supplement can also help your body to produce other proteins that you skin needs like elastin and fibrillin.

  • Relieves joint pain. Collagen will actually help to maintain the cartilage in your joints from getting thinner as you age. The supplement will also stimulate new growth of cartilage to continue to protect your joints, so if you suffer from arthritis or any kind of joint pain, this is huge! I have noticed a significant difference in my lower joints like my hips and knees that I’ve always had issues with as residual damage from my years of dancing.

  • Collagen can prevent bone loss! Wow! You bones are actually mostly made of collagen, something I did not know, and again adding a supplement will prevent any kind of aging to the bones and protect from medical conditions like osteoporosis.

  • Possibility to boost your muscle mass! According to some studies done on the efficacy of collagen and muscle mass, it can help people with conditions such as sarcopenia, the loss os muscle mass that comes along with aging. Collagen can also support the synthesis of other proteins your muscles need, like creatine, which is usually supplemented by weight lifters like myself to support muscle health while training.

  • HEART HEALTH! Listen, after this past year, is our health not the most important thing to focus on right now?? Some researchers theorize that collagen can help reduce risk of some heart conditions. Without enough collagen pumping through your body, your arteries can become weakened or fragile. The collagen supplement will support these arteries and help your body not work as hard to pump your blood. INCREDIBLE!

  • Hair, nails, gut health, brain health, and weight loss are all grouped together for number 6. Let me tell you if I’ve seen any difference in my body from taking collagen, it is 1000% in my hair, skin, and nails. I feel so good from the inside and out as weird as that sounds, but it’s the only way I can describe it.

Go out and grab yourself some collagen and get to it! Let’s keep our bodies as healthy as we can!!

deep dive into hair extensions

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

Hello beauties! Today I’m blogging about a request I got to go into everything you need to know about hair extensions. I’m going to go through the different types of extensions that I am certified in behind the chair, and let you know how to up keep them and take care of them for ultimate success.

Disclaimer: lots of people get worried when they hear about hair extensions because they think their hair is going to get super damaged- that is just not the case. If your stylist knows what they are doing, no damage will ever occur along with you caring for your hair properly while they are installed.

I got certified in Perfectress hair extensions and am now realizing that lots of women don’t know much about them, at least not as much as I once assumed. The minute I bring up extensions, I see the look in someone’s eyes of like pure terror and I don’t like seeing that reaction.

Hair extensions come in a few different systems, and depending on what’s best for your hair needs, will then decide which system you will get. I am certified in tape-in, single strand connections, and link weft extensions. Now, these terms sound scary and strange, but I will explain them all and show you examples so you can get a great visual of each.

My personal favorite type of hair extensions, are the Ultimate Link Weft extensions from Perfectress. Made out of 100% remy human hair, these beauties can curl, straighten, shampoo, blow dry, etc. as you would your natural hair. These kinds of extensions are great for adding tons of volume to fine or thinning hair along with some length. Do you feel like your hair is super flat and your pony tail is made up of four strands of hair? Do you just want more hair on your head to play with? These are the best option for you!!

A link weft hair extension is a full row of hair attached to a super flat and thin linking system to secure the hair to your head. Your own hair supports these wefts with tiny beads. A typical install takes about 15-20 minutes per weft. That means an installation appointment will take less than an hour in the salon!

The wefts are by far the most popular type of extension installed because they’re so easy both for your stylist to install but also for you to upkeep at home.

The upkeep for the Ultimate Link Weft includes:

  • do not sleep on your hair wet

  • do not put any conditioner on your scalp- anything that’s oily that can get into the beads holding the weft to your hair will cause the beads to loosen and fall out

  • wash your hair every 2-4 days, or use dry shampoo to soak up any moisture/sebum where the wefts are so the beads don’t loosen

  • use a boar bristle hair brush and brush your hair from the bottom working upwards

  • sleep with your hair in either a low ponytail, pigtails, or braids

  • you definitely don’t want to pile your hair on the very top of your head in a messy bun style

That’s it! So easy! You can operate per usual with these extensions in, just being a little more mindful of these few things to care for them.

These wefts are supported by your own hair, which means they grow out as your hair grows out.

Now back to the topic of damage. The ONLY thing I have seen from working with these extensions is just a touch of some shampoo build up where the weft was initially installed due to improper shampooing or rinsing of the shampoo. This is literally so minimal and if you maintain and move up your wefts every 8-10 weeks, your stylist will cleanse your scalp and give you a great shampoo before putting the wefts back in so this is virtually NOTHING of concern, it’s just what I’ve noticed when moving up the wefts. I haven’t seen any heavy fall out, breakage, or any other damage to the hair which is why I truly love these types of extensions so very much.

The most amazing thing about the Perfectress brand is that with proper care, your extensions will last you up to one whole year! Typically other brands are 6-8 months, but these ones will be a one time a year purchase which is so budget friendly that it makes this a no brainer!!

As I mentioned before, the other two types of extensions are tape ins and single strand connections.

I personally feel that tape ins and connections are more for filling in any gaps in the hair, adding some more hair to finer areas, helping with hair loss, helping with growing out a shorter haircut, etc. They are not personally my favorite or my go-to for every client.

If you have a lot of hair but feel like you are super fine in your temple area on the parietal ridge part of your head, definitely throw in a few strands or tape ins just to fill those areas in more. If you feel you need to wash your hair every day, the strand by strand connections make it a bit easier to do so. You can also add some fun pops of color or highlights without using color on your hair with the tapes or connections which makes life easier sometimes as well.

Now, this is just my personal opinion/preference. Anyone that is certified in extensions has a different preference, but after working with all the systems, I really do feel that the wefts are the best option depending on what my clients’ needs are.

Both of these systems also grow out naturally with your hair and need to be moved up every 8-10 weeks as well. Definitely no damage with these systems either!

The maintenance is about the same across all systems in the Perfectress brand. Other extension brands will vary on up keep, price, quality, etc.

I am completely in love with Perfectress as a brand and the innovation and quality that the brand brings to the hair industry. It’s a love affair that I am totally okay with because it’s another way for me to help women feel amazing about themselves which is always a win in my book!

If you have any other questions, concerns, or even want to set up a consultation with me if you’re in the area, give my hair page on Instagram a follow and message me! I’m @bella.mia.hair and you can find all kinds of fun stuff on there including my work with extensions!

Is dry shampoo actually BAD for your hair?

Sagittis vitae et leo duis ut diam quam nulla. Sit amet aliquam id diam maecenas. Quam quisque id diam vel quam elementum.

Okay guys, we are going to talk about something that has actually changed my perspective SO much not only as a hair stylist but as a human all together. Yes, I’m dramatic, but this is huge for me.

I’m sure you’ve all heard it’s not good to wash your hair every day and all that jazz. I’m also sure you’ve heard about dry shampoo and how it’s great for days when you don’t wash your hair and you need a refresh!

WELL… it’s actually not as great as you think it is for your scalp and your hair! I know, I was actually mind blown too. This topic was actually brought to my attention by a fellow hair stylist, Danielle (@_danielledoeshair), and she made so much sense it was ridiculous.

Danielle talked about how dry shampoo can have some not so good effects to your hair and scalp. She basically summed up how anything that is meant to dry out your hair should never be used or produced.

Let me back up a little bit, when you break down the science of the scalp, you will learn all about the natural sebum that your scalp produces to nourish your hair. This sebum, or ‘grease’, is packed full of nutrients and vitamins to keep your hair healthy and at its best. When you wash your hair every day, you are unintentionally stripping this sebum out and taking away what your hair actually needs.

Now, we’ve always thought that the answer to keeping our hair healthy and not washing it was to apply dry shampoo to soak up any excess oil and sebum and help you to go longer in between washes. Wait a minute, doesn’t this sound like you’re doing the exact same as just washing your hair? Yes and no.

In my opinion, too much of anything is never good. After I read Danielle’s post and took it all into consideration, I decided to do a little experiment of my own. I typically wash my hair once per week which means I go 5-6 days without washing my hair. I know, it seems like a stretch, but it’s always worked for me because I had dry shampoo to make my hair seem like it’s way less dirty than it actually is. I decided to stop using dry shampoo for a few weeks and see how I felt.

I braided my hair, wore some headbands, and tried to manipulate it in ways that you couldn’t see my grease as much. I was also rinsing my hair in the shower and conditioning the ends a bit to rinse off any excess sebum without shampooing it and stripping my hair like we talked about above.

I have to say this, my scalp is way less dry and itchy after trying this out! Usually by the time I get to day 3 or 4 I feel like I need to claw the heck out of my head because it would get so itchy and flaky. I was kind of surprised to be honest, pleasantly surprised. I always chalked it up to having a dryer scalp in the winter time or ‘sure my head is itchy I haven’t washed it in 5 days’ but I never would’ve thought that I was using too much dry shampoo! I also loved the dry shampoo because it would give my fine hair volume and texture and when you have hair like me, you’re always trying to figure out ways to give yourself more body.

Once again, I was shocked that as a professional I never thought of dry shampoo in this way before. Over the last week or so I have applied just a touch of dry shampoo to the front sections of my hair before I go to work in the morning depending on how I’m wearing my hair that day, and my scalp has been okay so far! I’m not utilizing it every day anymore, though, just when I feel like I actually do need it.

It’s so easy to get caught up in trendy products and such and again, too much of anything is never the best idea. Is dry shampoo terrible for your hair? Some may say absolutely, I definitely agree BUT a little bit here and there won’t be as bad if you utilize it sparingly. Don’t overdo it or go crazy and spray your entire head, let those oils shine! Your natural sebum is to help nourish your scalp and hair and it contains all the nutrients and proteins to give your hair that silkiness and shine like you see in the commercials!

Moral of the story, I’ve learned a lot from this! Thank you to Danielle for showing me the light, and hopefully this has also given you a new perspective on dry shampoo! Whether you are a die hard shampoo lover like me, or you could care less and use it every once in a while, I think the verdict is that dry shampoo definitely is not the best product ever in creation like I always thought. It’s been a difficult break up, but it’s what is best for my scalp and hair so I guess it needed to be done sooner or later!

Let me know your thoughts on this! xoxo
