how does health and nutrition play into your hair, skin, and nails?
Okay friends, today I’m going to get a little technical and deep dive into something I feel I’m always having to explain and it’s just something that doesn’t really get talked about.
I’m sure we’ve all heard the phrase “you are what you eat” and while that phrase can be abrasive or offensive, it’s pretty accurate in the basic explanation of putting good into your body and getting/looking good on the outside of your body.
A lot of people don’t relate their hair, skin or nails as being a ‘part’ of their body since they aren’t major organs like your heart or liver. But whenever I get a client in my chair that asks why their hair is so unhealthy, the first thing I do is ask “what vitamins are you taking?” and they just look at me like, “huh?”
It’s SO IMPORTANT to keep your hair and skin and nails as healthy as possible. If you think about it, we as women are always trying new skincare products and wearing makeup, always coloring our hair, and always getting our nails done. That is all so normal and there is nothing wrong with that, HOWEVER, over time these things can take a toll just like anything else. Your nails will become weak from all the UV gel polish, your hair is going to be damaged from all the highlights, and your skin is going to be all mixed up from the sun exposure and continuation of different products.
What’s the way to fix that? Treat these parts of your body as you do the others. Take a hair, skin and nail vitamin every single day. You need biotin, zinc, collagen, vitamins D, C, and E to support healthy hair, skin and nails. Collagen helps with your skin’s elasticity and helps to give your hair more life. Biotin and vitamin E support healthy hair and nail growth, and vitamins D and C just strengthen everything in your body. You also shouldn’t be eating tons of sugar and making sure you get lots of nutrients from fruits and vegetables as these foods have tons of vitamins and minerals and micronutrients that our body needs as well to look and feel good.
It’s so very simple, but not enough people are doing this. Why is that? Well, we have social media telling us that our hair grows from the ends as opposed to our scalp so now we are making weird concoctions of egg whites and mayonnaise as a ‘hair mask’ and thinking those ingredients will grow our hair. The amount of young girls I get in my chair that come in and say. ‘oh I saw this hair hack on tik tok’ or ‘yeah I saw this mask recipe on pinterest’. NO. PLEASE NO.
Your hair grows from your SCALP which gets nourished by whatever you put into your body. It is not the other way around so get out of the kitchen and stop making weird combinations of foods that will do absolutely nothing for you besides waste your time. It is so frustrating to me as a professional hair stylist but it is also a great opportunity to talk about it on here.
Taking care of your body is more than just physical exercise and taking a multivitamin. Your hair, skin and nails are just as important and you need to stop neglecting them. Get off social media and ask your professional hair stylist for recommendations. It’s simple, and will save you so much time and aggravation.
These vitamins that I listed also help a multitude of other things inside your body and not just your hair, skin or nails. Nourish your body, and put good into it. Your hair and nails grow from inside of you, and your skin has so many layers that go beneath the surface. You cannot possibly nourish them from the outside because that’s not how the human body works!
Do you need to use good products and keep up with regular haircuts? Absolutely. Should you get facials and services to help nourish your skin? Totally. Should you go get your nails done and pedicures to clean and keep up your nails? Definitely. BUT to actually grow healthy, happy hair and nails, and to support healthy cell turnover in your skin, you NEED to put good things into your body.
It’s literally science my friends. Mayonnaise is not science, vitamins and your body chemistry are science.
